Course: New Technology and Innovations for Surveyors

Instructor: Allen Nobles, PSM

Format: English Slide Presentation with Audio

Hours: 2 Technical Hours

Description:

In this two hour course, the engineer will learn the latest technologies flooding the surveying field. Survey technology is evolving faster than most can keep up. Therefore, it is important to stay informed in order to prevent oneself from getting left behind. In this course, engineers and surveyors both benefit from learning about changes in the creation and output of survey data. Currently, engineers and surveyors work with data that is becoming more and more based in three dimensions. New technology makes surveying data easier to capture and review immediately.

Engineers who take this course will gain familiarity with 5+ surveying technologies that are changing the field. Some of these technologies include GNSS (Global navigation satellite system), UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), and LiDAR. Each of these technologies is improving surveyors’ access to data and the accuracy of image and point data collected, most specifically mobile technology. The days of images and survey data miscorrelating are over. In this course, surveyors and engineers learn about the survey imagery produced, used, and captured in the field. They will explore how vector linework can now be directly integrated into survey data files. This is important to surveyors capturing and producing survey data in the future.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Recall the features and future of UAVs in the surveying industry.

  • State various LiDAR model collection methods and their maintenance.
  • Recall future changes in the surveying field and technologies.
  • State key aspects of GNSS technology.
  • Describe the latest changes in mobile technology use in the surveying field.
